Poodle Sizes: Standard, Miniature & Toy

Poodle sizes are a useful starting point when comparing puppies, but they do not tell you everything about an individual dog. Use this guide to understand the three size categories used by the American Kennel Club, then consider daily life, handling and care.
Compare the three poodle sizes
| Size | Adult height | Explore |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Over 15 inches | Standard puppies |
| Miniature | Over 10 inches, up to 15 inches | Miniature puppies |
| Toy | 10 inches or less | Toy puppies |
These definitions come from the official AKC poodle standard published by the Poodle Club of America. They describe adult height categories, not a promise about a particular puppy’s eventual measurements.
Think beyond the size label
Imagine ordinary tasks: lifting a dog into a car, providing a comfortable resting area, supervising visitors and arranging care when you are away. Compare those tasks with the space and help available in your household. Ask about the puppy’s parents and current growth rather than relying on a photo to estimate adult size.
All three sizes need time, thoughtful handling and an ongoing coat-care plan. Ask a groomer about a routine that fits the coat length you prefer. Our poodle grooming guide can help you prepare that conversation.
Standard or Miniature?
If your shortlist includes both, read our Standard vs Miniature poodle guide. It considers transport, daily routines and practical planning without assuming every dog of a given size has the same personality.
Choosing a Toy poodle
With a smaller dog, think carefully about safe handling, steps, furniture and interactions with larger animals. Explain your household to the breeder and ask how the individual puppy responds to handling. Size alone does not establish suitability for children or another pet.
